5 Winter Pests in Syracuse

Picture this: You wake one morning to admire the menorah or the stockings or the prayer rug, and lo and behold, spiders have webbed all over the candles, ants are crawling all over the tree, or a mouse has nibbled up the prayer rug. Sounds like a fantastic greeting to begin the holiday season, right?

Yeah, no: Common house pests spread diseases and infiltrate crawl spaces and hiding spots inside your Syracuse area homestead. So today we're talking about the best ways to protect your home, prevent your food and water from contamination, and keep this holiday season in exactly the right spirit.

Most Common Pests

1. Spiders

Spiders can bite humans too, not just fruit flies, so always be careful around them. The two most dangerous spiders in North America are the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse, but you're not likely to find these around your Syracuse home.

Other spiders live in Syracuse, though, and they get inside and hole up in numerous locations, in your basement, in the crawl space under your house, attics, and other quiet storage areas. If you're bitten, take the spider body with you to the emergency room for identification.

Although uncommon, the Northern Black Widow, which has red markings on its back, can be found in some places in upstate New York when transported there, and modern transportation makes it easy.

2. Carpenter ants

Almost as bad as hearing, "You've got termites," are the words, "You've got carpenter ants," because both species cause huge amounts of damage to homes and businesses each year. Although carpenter ants don't digest the wood like termites do, they use their mandibles to tunnel and create galleries and nesting chambers in your walls.

Carpenter ants, or any ant species, establish themselves inside the walls during the home's construction when the walls are open to the elements. They consume the protein- and sugar-based glues used in modern construction and can remain hidden there for years.

Bed Bugs

3. Bed bugs

Bed bugs are one of the most terrifying insect infestations to confront because these vampiric insects suck your blood every night. They can survive months without a blood meal, and because they survived the use of DDT during the previous century, they are resistant to most pesticides, which is a recipe for disaster.

You could say bed bugs are contagious because you could pick them up almost anywhere, from the subway station to the last hotel where you spent a night. The EPA has some ways to find and prevent an infestation, and professional pest control is always the best method to get rid of them.

4. Cockroaches

Roaches are some of the most infamous pests in the world, and they're almost synonymous with "dirty" or unkempt homes.

The fact is, your kitchen and bathroom could be the cleanest in the neighborhood, and you could still get them because of how easy it is to carry them in grocery bags, boxes, or even in the turnups of your pants!

5. Mice and Rats

Mice and rats: These little menaces can infiltrate almost any unprotected house at any time of the year, particularly in winter. They can carry lots of diseases, but the most likely problems they'll cause in your home are to contaminate food and destroy property.

Pet food and food storage are strong attractants for mice and rats because they are packed with nutrients and smell nice to them. (See control methods below). Mice can squeeze themselves into spaces as small around as 1/4 inch, and rats only need 1/2 inch open spaces to infiltrate your home.

3 Steps to Getting Rid of Winter Pests Yourself

1. Block off Entry Points

Use silicone caulking, steel wool, and copper wire mesh to block cracks and crevices around doors and windows, plug up the gaps around utility pipes, and seal the cracks around sill plates.

Use a steel screen to cover larger holes, like gutter spouts or gaps around chimneys or brick siding. The screening should have no larger than 1/4 inch gauges.

2. Get Rid of Attractants and Hiding Spots

Clean up your yard, gather fallen limbs, keep bushes from house siding cracks, and store firewood at least 20 feet from the home.

Seal up your food sources to keep rodents and other pests from looking for it. If they don't have a reason to come inside, they probably will move elsewhere.

3. Common Household Pest Control

The best way to prevent rodents from coming inside is to seal up food and block entry points because repellants don't usually work. Mice are more likely to explore traps and bait if they move, but rats are suspicious and will ignore new things.

Bug's joints are made of a type of grease, so mix grease-fighting soap and water in a spray bottle and use that on them when they come scurrying out.
